Adult Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder
Tuesday, October 26, 2004Parents and teachers are more aware of ADHD in children, better known as Attention Deficit – Hyperactivity Syndrome. But did you know this same syndrome can be present in adults. Dr. Ken Davis explains in the Sixty Second Housecall.
More and more adults are being diagnosed with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD. Experts estimate that up to four percent of adults may suffer from ADHD. Children are more prone to the symptoms of hyperactivity and impulsiveness, while the adults more commonly exhibit inattention.
Adults with ADHD usually have some history of problem learning when they were in school.
The diagnosis of ADHD in adults includes problems of
- inattention – where people have difficulty listening, organizing tasks, or fail to complete work or home duties
- hyperactivity – where people are unable to sit still for any period of time, or they talk excessively
- impulsivity – where people often interrupt others or have difficulty impatiently awaiting their turn.
Adults with ADHD often have difficulty successfully completing projects in school, at work or at home. It may seriously affect their life by destroying work and home relationships.
There are very successful medication treatments for adults whose lives are affected by ADHD. If you know of an adult experiencing these problems, recommend that he or she be tested for ADHD. For North Mississippi Medical Center, I’m Dr. Ken Davis.
