Depression Signs
Friday, February 15, 2008We all have normal “blue” periods when our mood is down. When does this become a serious depression? Dr. Ken Davis discusses some warning signs of depression in today’s 60 Second Housecall.
Mood swings are a normal part of adjustment to our hectic lives. Everyone alternates between feeling high and feeling low. When these low symptoms persist, you may have depression. These are a few symptoms that should set off an alarm:
- Persistent sad, anxious, or “empty” mood
- Feelings of hopelessness and pessimism
- Feelings of guilt, worthlessness or helplessness
- Loss of interest or pleasure in hobbies and activities, including sex
- Decreased energy and fatigue
- Difficulty concentrating, remembering and making decisions
- Insomnia, early-morning awakening, or oversleeping
- Appetite and weight loss or overeating and weight gain
- Thoughts of death or suicide, especially suicide plans
- Restlessness or irritability, and
- Persistent physical symptoms such as headaches, digestive disorders, and chronic pain
If you, a friend or loved one have these symptoms of depression, seek help from a physician, minister,
or behavioral specialist.
