Support Groups

A support group can be an excellent source of information and encouragement for people in need of emotional and physical help. Dr. Ken Davis discusses support groups in today’s 60 Second Housecall.

Research on support groups has shown that they can have a powerful and positive effect on a person’s life and health status. They can empower an individual through a deep bond that can be developed with others in the group. Stories, concerns, experiences and emotional support of the other members allow participants to see that they are not alone in their fear, despair or need.

One study found that women with breast cancer who went to a support group lived an average of 18 months longer. Most groups are either free or have a minimal cost or charge.

A support group can be an excellent source of encouragement and education. A good support group will also teach you more about your illness and keep you informed of medical advances.  Reach out to a support group and find others who have been through what you are facing.
