Sometimes people are faced with problems they simply cannot overcome by themselves...severe and debilitating depression, self-destructive dependence on alcohol or drugs, or persistent psychological troubles. Mental illness affects families, businesses and entire communities. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, more than 17.4 million Americans each year suffer from depressive illness. That's one in seven people. Our nation's direct medical care costs and indirect costs from mental illness, alcohol and drug abuse totaled more than $313 billion in 1990. Clearly our focus should be on prevention, early intervention and treatment.
The North Mississippi Medical Center Behavioral Health Center is a place where families who are struggling with problems such as these can come to get help and hope. The Behavioral Health Center is a 66-bed free-standing facility located on the campus of North Mississippi Medical Center. It is staffed with an outstanding treatment team of psychiatrists, licensed clinical psychologists, registered nurses, social workers, professional counselors and physicians who monitor the medical and emotional needs of patients.
In most instances patients will have an initial assessment session with a mental health professional. The outcome of this assessment will guide the patient in developing an appropriate plan-of-care, based upon his/her individual needs. Treatment programs include inpatient, outpatient and partial hospitalization, providing a complete continuum of care for adults and seniors who are seeking help for problems such as depression, substance abuse, anxiety disorders, dementia, and other psychiatric and behavioral disorders. Counseling is also available for domestic violence issues, marriage, family and personal problems, and grief issues.
