| Located in the lobby of the
NMMC Cancer Center. Joyce B. Atwell Resource Library - Understanding
what cancer is, how it starts and how it can be treated is a powerful
way to take control of the disease. The Resource Library gives patients, their family members
and the public the opportunity to learn about cancer
prevention, detection and treatment. |

The center houses a collection of
information including magazines, medical journals and reference books,
self-help publications and periodicals on health and medicine as well as
video and audio tapes. New information is added regularly.Home Health - The NMMC Home
Health Agency offers cancer patients in a 17-county area a full range of
services including skilled and specialty nursing, rehabilitation
services and respiratory therapy, as well as administration of IV
antibiotics, chemotherapy and blood transfusions. These services
are requested as needed by the patient's physician.
Hospice - Hospice care is a
specialized program to help manage pain and other symptoms associated
with terminal illness. Chaplains, dietitians, physicians, nurses,
therapists and volunteers are available through the NMMC Home Health
Agency.

Retail Center - The
NMMC Cancer Center offers a retail center that specializes in products for
cancer patients. Caps, ideal for patients with hair loss from cancer
treatment, as well as cookbooks written specifically for individuals
undergoing cancer treatment, are a sampling of the merchandise available.
All items are sold at cost. The retail center's hours are 8 a.m. to
5 p.m. Monday through Friday. |
Nutrition
- Maintaining a nutritional status for cancer patients is a challenge
because therapeutic techniques, such as radiation, surgery or drug
therapy, may adversely affect their quality of life, tolerance of
treatment, and in some cases, their survival. Working with
physicians, nurses, patients and families, our registered dietitian
identifies those patients who are at nutritional risk and develop goals
for them based on a comprehensive nutritional assessment.
Radiation Oncology Clinician -
The radiation oncology clinician meets with the Cancer Center treatment
team to discuss patients' treatment plans, and helps educate patients
and family members.
Social Services - Oncology social
workers help patients and families handle the changes associated with
cancer diagnosis. Issues can include work-related stress, marriage
and family disruptions, depression, anxiety and phobias, child and
adolescent problems, well-being and spiritual concerns.
|
| Shuttle Service - By providing
radiation oncology patients with transportation, NMMC's Cancer Center is
helping families overcome one obstacle that can interfere with cancer
treatment. The shuttle service, made
possible by a generous donation from Journal Publishing, serves more
than 30 counties within a 60-mile radius of the NMMC Cancer
Center. Physicians, nurses and staff work closely with these
patients to coordinate their appointments with the shuttle bus schedule. |
