Dereck
Young, Pharm.D.
Pharmacist
I
worked part-time as a licensed practical nurse
at North Mississippi Medical Center when I
started pharmacy school at the University of
Mississippi. NMMC allowed me to work as a
pharmacy technician with flexible scheduling to
accommodate the demands of school. |
I
received tuition assistance from NMMC, which allowed me to
finish my bachelor’s degree in pharmacy. My original intention
was to work in a retail store because those were the only
pharmacists I knew and I didn’t realize the opportunities
afforded to hospital pharmacists.
Since
1988, I have worked in several satellite locations of the NMMC
pharmacy, as well as provided home health care. Working for a
health care system enables me to change jobs without changing
employers or losing employee benefits.
In
2000, I earned my doctoral degree in pharmacy. NMMC paid all
tuition cost and several classes were held at the hospital using
distance learning technology. In my current job as neurology
pharmacy specialist, I educate stroke and seizure patients about
their medications and help acquire medications for those who
can’t afford them. I also participate in research through the
hospital’s clinical drug trials.

Paula
Duvall, RN
I
worked in a fast food restaurant and a factory for many years
after high school. But when I watched them wheel my brother to
surgery to remove a brain tumor, I thought “one day I’ll
find out what goes on behind those doors.” |
 |
At
age 26, I enrolled in an operating room technician program and
began working at NMMC. With help from the hospital’s college
tuition reimbursement program, I entered nursing school in 1990
and continued to work weekends as an OR tech while completing my
studies to become an RN and raising three young children. The
hospital’s flexible hours enabled me to fulfill this dream in
1992.
Now
I am specialty team coordinator for general, vascular and
thoracic surgery. I go home every day with the satisfaction of
knowing I helped someone.
In
addition to tuition reimbursement, NMMC offers scholarships,
flexible scheduling, mentoring programs and other incentives for
nurses. To learn more about becoming part of our team, call

Roy
Price
Respiratory
Therapist
For
many years I worked as manager of a video arcade and on the
assembly line for a local furniture manufacturer. While I
enjoyed both jobs, I was looking for a career where I could
truly help people. My wife Sheba, who is a registered nurse at
North Mississippi Medical Center, encouraged me to pursue a
health career. In 1999, I earned an associate’s degree in
respiratory therapy from Itawamba Community College and began my
own career with NMMC.
|
 |
As
a respiratory therapist, I do assessments, breathing treatments
and ventilation for critical care patients. I also assist with
Medical and Surgical Intensive Care Unit patients. My job is
challenging, exciting and, most of all, rewarding.
NMMC
is looking for individuals who share our organization’s values
and put patients first. To learn more about becoming part of our
team, or for advice on pursuing a career in health care, call
