The Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program at North Mississippi Medical Center-Hamilton works to improve quality of life for patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), including: emphysema, chronic bronchitis, asthma, cystic fibrosis, lung cancer, lung transplant, pulmonary fibrosis and other types of COPD. The program focuses on muscle strengthening by incorporating:
All while keeping a close watch on oxygen levels, heart rate and blood pressure. In addition to the benefit of fewer hospital admissions, the patients at NMMC-Hamilton experience other measureable improvements. Mental quality of life scores have improved by an average of 26.25 percent, and physical quality of life by 28.85 percent. Several patients no longer require supplemental oxygen, and some only need it at night. Several have also been able to taper off some of their breathing treatments.
