Mammography and Bone Density

Mammography is the study of the breast using X-ray. The actual test is called a mammogram. There are two types of mammograms. A screening mammogram is ordered for women who have no problems with their breasts. It consists of two X-ray views of each breast. A diagnostic mammogram is for evaluation of new abnormalities or of patients with a past abnormality requiring follow-up. Additional X-rays from other angles or special views of certain areas are taken for a diagnostic study. For more information, visit

Bone Density
A bone density test uses X-rays to measure how many grams of calcium and other bone minerals are packed into a segment of bone. The bones that are most commonly tested are in the spine, hip and forearm. This test is used to diagnose osteoporosis, a disease that causes bones to become more fragile and more likely to break.
