PONTOTOC, Miss.—North Mississippi Medical Center-Pontotoc will sponsor a health fair from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 8, at the West Heights Baptist Church Family Life Center, 328 West Oxford Street.
Free screenings include blood pressure checks, stroke screenings, depression screenings and body fat composition tests. Optometrist Terry Wood, O.D., will provide free eye exams.
Information will be provided about breast cancer, diabetes and congestive heart failure. First National Bank will provide information on identity theft. Local dentists will provide dental care information. S.A.F.E. Inc. will provide information on domestic violence.
The Mississippi State Department of Health will offer flu shots throughout the event. NMMC will offer $5 hearing screenings as well as $12.50 blood glucose/cholesterol screenings. Familymeds Pharmacy will provide free take-home colorectal cancer screening kits.
NMMC’s Community Health Department will offer bone density screening for osteoporosis. A device known as the Achilles Express bone ultrasonometer uses ultrasound to assess the bone quality of a person's heel and indicate the risk of bone fracture caused by osteoporosis. The device’s sensitivity is comparable to x-ray bone densitometry at the spine or hip.
