TUPELO, Miss.—If you’ve ever considered a career in nursing, North Mississippi Medical Center has an opportunity for you Friday, Nov. 12.
NMMC
is hosting the fourth annual Nurse Expo from 8:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. at the Lee
County Agricenter’s Magnolia Building, 5395 Hwy. 145, Verona. The event will help anyone already in the
workforce who has considered pursuing a career in nursing learn how to do so.
Exhibits will feature information from area nursing schools and various NMMC nursing specialty units such as trauma, aeromedical services, surgery, oncology, pediatrics and neurology. Financial aid information will be available, as well as job applications and onsite interviews for those who seek employment in nursing. North Mississippi Medical Center offers scholarships, tuition reimbursement, flexible scheduling, mentoring programs and other nursing incentives.
Educational sessions will begin at 9 a.m., 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. demonstrating how nurses use skills such as intubation, ventilation, surgical techniques and trauma care for patients. A mock Code Blue will be staged. Tours of NMMC will also be scheduled at specified intervals with transportation provided.
In light of a nationwide nursing shortage, local organizers hope Nurse Expo will encourage more individuals to consider a career in nursing. “By the year 2010, experts are predicting the nursing shortage to be at its peak,” explained NMMC nursing vice president Patti McCue. “We have been fortunate here, but we’re implementing recruitment and retention strategies, including events like Nurse Expo, now to ensure that we can promote an adequate supply of nurses in our community in the years to come.”
Nursing opportunities are available throughout NMMC, a regional health care system that includes hospitals in Tupelo, Eupora, Iuka, Pontotoc and West Point, Miss., and Hamilton, Ala.; four nursing homes; approximately 40 medical clinics; and comprehensive home health and rehabilitation services.
