LOCAL DOCTOR, NATIONAL GUARD UNIT

NOMINATED FOR AWARD

WEST POINT, Miss.—Colonel Ronald E. Powell, D.O., and the Mississippi Army National Guard Medical Detachment have been nominated for The Surgeon General’s Excalibur Award.

Dr. Powell, who is a family physician with West Point Medical Clinic, serves as State Surgeon for the Mississippi National Guard. His unit revised the Over 40 Physical Process, which resulted in significant cost savings and ensured the actual causes for screening failures were being addressed. Simultaneously, this team screened more than 5,000 soldiers for deployment in support of the Global War on Terrorism.

“The high level of professionalism and expertise displayed by this team brings great credit to the Mississippi National Guard and the United States Army,” states the nomination from Harold A. Cross, Major General, MSNG, Adjunct General of Mississippi. “Their efforts and contributions to the medical readiness of our soldiers make them worthy of this prestigious award.”

Dr. Powell holds a bachelor’s degree in biology from Arkansas State University and a bachelor’s degree in pharmacy from the University of Mississippi. He earned his medical degree from the Kansas City College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed an internship at Mount Clemens General Hospital in Michigan. He is board certified by the American Osteopathic Board of Family Physicians.

Dr. Powell has practiced in West Point since 1980. He has 24 years of military service and is scheduled for deployment to Iraq in January.
