BOWENS NAMED DIABETES EDUCATOR OF THE YEAR

BOONEVILLE, Miss.—Mary Bowens, RN, a certified diabetes educator with the North Mississippi Medical Center Home Health Agency, was recently named Diabetes Educator of the Year at the Mississippi Association Diabetes Educators meeting in Jackson.

The award recognizes a diabetes educator like Bowens who has made a special contribution to diabetes education through dedication and innovation in the daily practice of patient care. Bowens has been a certified diabetes educator since 1995 and currently serves as president of the Mississippi Association of Diabetes Educators, a chapter of the American Association of Diabetes Educators.

“I am honored to receive this award, and I am honored to have been nominated by the nurses with whom I work,” Bowens said.

Bowens leads the Booneville Diabetes Support Group, which meets at 6 p.m. the first Thursday of every month at the George E. Allen Library.

The group is sponsored by NMMC’s Home Health Agency, the Diabetes Foundation of Mississippi and the Mississippi Association of Diabetes Educators. Meetings are open to anyone with diabetes or anyone that has an interest in learning more about diabetes.

Bowens is a resident of Booneville and has one son, James Bowens, and two grandchildren, Christa, 8; and Whitney, 7.
