TUPELO, Miss.—North Mississippi Medical Center employees recently presented 1,219 used cell phones to Jennifer Harwood (third from left), a social worker for S.A.F.E. Inc., a shelter for abused women in Tupelo. Making the presentation were (from left) Beverly Smith and Terry Brooks of NMMC’s Biomedical Communications Department; Harwood; Carah Walker-Edgeworth of IMA-Tupelo, a certified family nurse practitioner and member of NMMC’s Domestic Violence Sub-committee; Dewayne Dickerson, David Thomas and Linda Kimble, all of NMMC’s Biomedical Communications Department. NMMC and Cingular Wireless conducted a used cell phone drive throughout north Mississippi and northwest Alabama to help protect victims of domestic violence. Some of the phones will be reprogrammed to speed-dial 9-1-1 and S.A.F.E, and S.A.F.E. will redeem the remaining phones through The Wireless Foundation for up to $25 each.
