Two types of mammograms are available. A screening mammogram is used to detect breast
cancer in women with no current breast problems. The test can detect cancer
before it can be found by physician examination or other methods of diagnosis.
Screening mammograms are available through self-referral. Diagnostic mammograms
are scheduled for patients with current breast problems. A diagnostic mammogram
can rule out or confirm the presence of breast disease or abnormalities, which
may include cancer. Typically, mammogram studies consist of two views each of
the left and right breast. In some cases, the radiologist may request
additional views.
The
cost of a screening mammogram is $101. The results of the mammograms are read
by NMMC radiologists, physicians who specialize in interpreting x-ray,
ultrasound and other types of imaging studies.
Appointments
for all mammography services are scheduled in advance. To schedule a screening
mammogram, call (662) 377-4158 or 1-800-THE DESK (1-800-843-3375). Appointments
for diagnostic mammograms are scheduled by the woman’s physician.
