Purpose
The purpose of Adult Neurological Rehabilitation NMMC's Outpatient
Rehabilitation Center is to improve the level of functioning for
patients who have suffered stroke, brain injury, spinal cord injury or
any other debilitating neurological disorder through a coordinated and
integrated rehabilitation program.
Goals
Our goals are to assist the patient in regaining an optimal degree
of functional movement and use of body, communication, cognitive and
visual/perceptual function, and psychosocial skills. We work with the
patient on restoring/retraining the weakness or deficit, compensating
for it and/or adapting for it. This outpatient program should increase
an individual’s abilities to return to activities of daily living,
school, leisure, community and work.
Program
Patients are evaluated by each therapy service provided. A
treatment plan is developed with the patient and/or family members and
treatment team, and approved by a physician. A patient care
conference is held after the initial evaluation, every 30 days and prior
to discharge or when appropriate.
Services
An interdisciplinary team approach
is used in the treatment of neurological patients. Our services include
occupational therapy, physical therapy and speech-language pathology.
The facility is equipped with training areas including a kitchen,
bathroom and laundry facilities to increase a patient’s functional
independence and mobility in the home environment. The Bioness H200 and
L300 Neuroprosthetic and Rehabilitation System is also used with
appropriate patients to improve upper and lower limb function to
intensify therapy treatments. The Bioness integrates the most effective
state-of-the-art rehab practices. Home and work evaluations are also
available to assess the environment for accessibility, safety and
equipment needs.
Speech-Language Therapy
The speech-language pathologist
provides services to patients suffering from stroke, traumatic brain
injury and a variety of degenerative neurological diseases. The goal of
therapy is to continue to improve the quality of life for patients with
speech and swallowing related deficits and provide support and
instruction to assist family members in the care of these patients.
Speech-language pathology encompasses a wide range of therapeutic
services including, but not limited to, the remediation of verbal
expression skills, comprehension of spoken words and written language,
reading and writing skills, memory, organizational and executive
functioning skills, as well as remediation of voice and fluency related
disorders. The speech-language pathologist also specializes in the
treatment of swallowing deficits using specialized treatment techniques
such as VitalStim for swallowing
and Deep Pharyngeal Neuromuscular
Stimulation (DPNS).
Occupational
Therapy
Occupational therapy helps people whose lives have been disrupted by
physical injury or illness because of neurological insult or disease.
Each person's treatment program is based on his/her interests, abilities
and occupational background. Therapy incorporates purposeful,
goal-directed activities that are meaningful to the individual patient
to improve his or her quality of life. The occupational therapist
targets activities of daily living that could include cooking a meal,
caring for a child, driving a car or mowing the lawn. The
therapist uses specialized techniques to help the patient to regain
strength, coordination and movement in order to maximize independence.
The occupational therapist may also help identify special adaptive
equipment to help the patient and the caregiver complete daily
activities.

Physical Therapy
The physical therapist promotes independence and safety with
walking, use of a wheelchair, transfers, bed mobility,
balance/coordination and range of motion. In developing the
treatment plan the physical therapist considers factors such as pain
control, strength training and normalization of muscle imbalance.
The physical therapist may include various modalities such as
ultrasound, electrical stimulation or biofeedback to assist the patient
to regain motor control and improve independence.
