Trained professionals
with North Mississippi Medical Center’s Outpatient Rehabilitation
Center can assist persons with crutch training before surgery for the
optimal outcome. This instruction is provided free of charge to the
patient.
Crutch training
teaches proper technique for walking with crutches. This training helps
increase safety and reduce the risk of additional injury. With this
instruction, individuals learn how to perform daily activities safely
with crutches.
Who can benefit
from crutch training?
Ideal participants are patients
who have been diagnosed with an orthopedic problem or surgery that will
require the use of crutches.
Ideally, instruction
is given before surgery or as soon as the injury occurs because the
patient can better understand instruction without the effects of
anesthesia. The patient is able to practice before surgery to promote
safety and prevent additional injury post-operatively. Prior instruction
makes the use of crutches less stressful and less painful for the
patient.
How can I get this
training?
Crutch training is available 8
a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at the NMMC Outpatient
Rehabilitation Center. Appointments are available and walk-ins are
welcome.
Follow-Up Care
The professionals at the NMMC
Outpatient Rehabilitation Center are available to provide physical
therapy and occupational therapy services as recommended by a physician.
The staff keeps the physician updated throughout the course of treatment
through phone calls, evaluation reports and progress notes regarding
his/her patients.
