Patients, families
and physicians may need help in determining whether a person should
continue or resume driving following an injury or illness. The
driving assessment and training program offered by NMMC's Outpatient
Rehabilitation Center can provide the information needed to help make
that decision. A physician's referral is required, as well as a
current driver's license or learner's permit. The
evaluation is completed by a licensed occupational therapist.

Diagnoses that may be
appropriate for referral include, but are not limited to:
 |
Traumatic
brain injury |
 |
Stroke |
 |
Spinal
cord injury |
 |
Other
neurological disorders |
 |
Amputations |
 |
Debilitated conditions |
 |
Visual
deficits |
 |
Dementia |
The assessment begins
with screening for vision, reaction time, muscle strength and
cognitive abilities. A minimum one hour on-the-road driving
session is modified to meet
individual patient needs in the "rehab car" that is equipped with
adaptive equipment. The therapist will discuss the outcome of the
driving evaluation with the patient/family and make appropriate
recommendations regarding driving. If adaptive equipment is
required, the therapist will provide the patient/family information
regarding resources and installation. The physician be informed of
the patient's evaluation results and recommendations.
