The Sports Medicine Program was established in 1996 as a
community outreach program. This unique and valuable program provides
full-time Certified Athletic Trainers (ATCs) to local high schools and
community colleges at no charge to the schools. In addition, the NMMC
Sports Medicine Program also works in conjunction with Tupelo Parks and
Recreation and the Tupelo Convention and Visitors Bureau to attract
various state, regional and national sporting events.
The ATCs are dedicated to covering all athletic programs
and providing optimal health care for participating athletes. The staff
works closely with athletes, parents and coaches, and is trained to make
swift, appropriate decisions to minimize the effects of injury.
Preventive measures are taken to ensure a safe athletic environment, and
proper education and counseling are provided to coaches, athletes and
parents.
Providing full-time medical coverage of local athletic
programs is the primary responsibility of the certified athletic
trainers; however, the ATCs are also involved in many other
community-based programs:
 |
Provide a free Saturday Morning Injury Clinic, in
conjunction with local orthopedic surgeons, each Saturday
during football season
|
 |
Provide CPR certification training for area coaches and
students
|
 |
Provide annual free pre-participation physicals for area
high schools
|
 |
Host
educational clinics on injury prevention throughout the year
|
 |
Offer
lectures to various organization and health classes
|
 |
Provide free pre-participation physical exams and event
coverage for Area II Special Olympics |
