North Mississippi Medical Center is committed not only to providing the highest quality treatment for injury and disease but also to actively improving the quality of life of area residents. Through its Speakers Bureau, NMMC provides valuable health information to the communities it serves. Members of the NMMC Speakers Bureau are knowledgeable in a wide range of health-related topics. Their expertise is vast and their presentations are enlightening and informative. These speakers encourage area residents to make positive lifestyle choices that will help them maintain and/or improve their health.
Speakers include physicians, nurses and other health care professionals. Programs can be tailored to meet the needs of any organization or group. Examples of health education topics available through the Speakers Bureau include:
Many lives have been touched directly or indirectly by cancer. Education has been the predominant factor in early detection and improved survivor rates. Programs are available to teach participants how to help reduce their own cancer risk by reviewing lifestyle and environmental factors. Early detection techniques and signals are reviewed and special gender-related cancer issues are also addressed, such as breast and ovarian cancer for women and prostate cancer for men.
The heart is often considered the most important life-sustaining organ in the body. Many health problems occur when the heart and outlying veins and arteries are not functioning properly. Programs are available to discuss the basic anatomy and physiology of the heart, the definition of heart disease, signs and symptoms of a heart attack or stroke, and the risk factors of heart disease.
We have professionals who can provide valuable information about a wide variety of topics that pertain to circumstances that arise in our daily lives. How to manage stress, effective parenting and communication skills, how to cope with adult depression, and the management of various family issues are just a few examples of topics that can be presented.
Our professionals can address the many aspects of controlling infection. They cover, from a prevention perspective, topics such as HIV/AIDS, hepatitis B, tuberculosis, blood borne pathogens and other infectious diseases.
National studies have noted Mississippi as having a high prevalence of smoking among its residents. Smoking can lead to emphysema, lung cancer and other health problems. Programs through the Speakers Bureau explain the causes and effects of lung disease as well as how to best avoid, recover from and manage these diseases.
NMMC also offers free smoking cessation classes taught by certified American Cancer Society instructors. The classes explain the dangers of smoking and encourage a positive way for smokers to quit smoking.
Diabetes cannot be cured, but it can be controlled. Programs are available to teach people about diabetes and all aspects of its management. This information enables people with diabetes to gain greater control of their disease, suffer from fewer complications and discover new ways to live a better life with diabetes.
Children & Wellness
As parents, teachers, day care providers, coaches, etc., we are concerned about the health and well-being of our children, but it is not always easy to know what is good for them. Through the expertise of pediatricians and pediatric health care providers, the Speakers Bureau offers programs on a range of pediatric and adolescent health and wellness topics.
Elderly & Wellness
As our life expectancy increases, we are more susceptible to many injuries, illnesses and health problems. To better care for ourselves as we age, and to prepare for long-term care that will help our elderly loved ones live a comfortable, active and safe life, the NMMC Speakers Bureau includes geriatric specialists who can address these issues.
Nutrition & Exercise
People who exercise regularly and eat healthy foods feel better. They also face a lower risk of health problems, including heart disease, osteoporosis, hypertension and diabetes. The Speakers Bureau includes registered dietitians and fitness specialists who can address a wide variety of diet and exercise topics.
Snore No More
Snoring is more than a social problem. Snoring can be an indication of sleep apnea, a condition characterized by loud snoring, pauses in breathing, then gasps for air. Heavy snorers have more high blood pressure, strokes and heart attacks than the general public. Members of our Speakers Bureau can discuss the causes, effects and treatments of snoring.
Health Care Careers
The range of opportunity in health care careers and the demand for skilled personnel in these fields is continuing to increase. Nursing, physical therapy, medical records technicians and home health aides are only a few of the career choices within the health care industry. Members of the Speakers Bureau can explain these and other opportunities in health care and their expected growth, salary range, responsibilities and educational and training requirements.
