Cancer Wellness Program
Wellness
Centers affiliated with North Mississippi
Medical Center have begun offering this
area's first Cancer Wellness Program.
The program
is for people diagnosed with all types and
stages of cancer and is available at NMMC
Wellness Centers in Baldwyn, Iuka, Pontotoc,
Tupelo and West Point. Anyone who is
recently diagnosed with cancer and receiving
treatment is eligible to attend with a
physician's referral.
The Cancer
Wellness Program combines specifically
prescribed exercise with education and
support to guide a person through recovery.
Participants meet twice a week, and the fee
is $25 a month. Each hour-long session
includes exercises that are individually
prescribed by an exercise physiologist,
taking into account any limitations
recommended by the participant's physician.
Research
indicates that patients who are in good
physical condition may tolerate treatment
better than those who are not. A regular
exercise program may reduce fatigue, as well
as nausea, an occasional side effect of
cancer treatment. Exercise can also bolster
the immune system, an important part of
fighting cancer.
Along with
other education, a registered dietitian
teaches participants how to eat more
nutritionally, and a pharmacist is available
for medication counseling. For registration
and fee information, call Kelli Phipps@
377-4147. |
