NMMC Women’s Hospital
The area’s premiere resource for obstetrical,
gynecological, neonatal intensive care and routine
newborn services is North Mississippi Medical Center’s
Women’s Hospital.
The freestanding
hospital, which opened in 1986, offers cutting edge
technology and services in an attractive, homelike
environment.
|
 |
Throughout the Women’s
Hospital, we offer family-centered care, whether the
patient is a new mom, a newborn or a surgery patient.
|
|
|
Obstetrical Services
The NMMC Women’s Hospital
has been welcoming new additions to area families for
more than 20 years. Expectant mothers can labor, deliver
and recover in the same private birthing room, which is
both well-decorated and well-equipped. All birthing
rooms, as well as the three operating rooms and two
cesarean section rooms, contain state-of-the-art
technology to accommodate normal and high-risk
deliveries. |
|
Thanks to an advanced
monitoring system, our physicians can easily monitor
contractions, heart rate and other vital signs of 24
patients who are either in labor or under observation
simultaneously from the bedside, nurses station or even
their office computer. |
|
Gynecological
Services
The Women’s Hospital
provides inpatient and outpatient services for women in
all stages of life. The gynecological surgery service is
one of the busiest in the state.
Our surgeons perform
all types of gynecological surgery, including
laparoscopic hysterectomies, cesarean sections, bladder
repair, tubal ligation, and laparoscopic, gynecological
cancer and laser surgeries. The surgery suite contains
three operating rooms, with full-time anesthesia
coverage provided by staff anesthesiologists and nurse
anesthetists.
|
|
Visitation
The Women’s Hospital
visiting hours are
10 a.m.- 8:30 p.m. Siblings may visit
the mother and baby in the mother’s room, but no other
children under age 12 are permitted to visit.
Only three
adult visitors, including the father, are allowed in the
mother’s room when the baby is present. |
 |
|
Well Baby Services
As part of the Women’s
Hospital plan of family-centered care, pediatricians
provide care for well newborns during their hospital
stay. The physicians make daily rounds to assess each
baby’s health and to provide medical care as needed.
They visit mothers and family members to provide updates
on the infant’s health. Nurses provide reassurance and
hands-on instruction in breastfeeding and infant care as
moms make the transition from delivery to motherhood.
Parents of
infants who are unable to leave the nursery are
encouraged to visit the baby in the nursery. Special
instructions regarding nursery visitation are provided
to these parents.

|
Neonatal Intensive Care
Services
The hospital’s neonatal
intensive care unit is a specialty care facility
designed to handle the extensive problems encountered by
the premature or critically ill newborn. Board-
certified neonatologists, specially-trained nurses,
respiratory therapists and pharmacists treat patients
from throughout the region, whether they are born at the
Women’s Hospital or transferred by Carexpress Mobile
Transport for Kids to
Tupelo from hospitals in outlying communities |
 |
|
Neonatologists provide
medical care for sick newborn infants, who are born
prematurely, are having difficulty making the transition
from fetal life to life after birth, or are suffering
from congenital malformations or infectious diseases.
Teleconferencing allows
pediatricians to participate in real-time discussion
with surrounding medical centers, including Le Bonheur
Children’s Medical Center and Vanderbilt University
Medical Center.
A reunion, sponsored by
the NICU, is hosted every other year to reunite its
“graduates” with the physicians and nurses who provided
their care.
The neonatologists’
private offices are located in the hospital to enable
them to closely monitor their patients’ conditions and
provide immediate care.

Newborn Follow-up
Clinic
The Newborn Follow-up
Clinic helps identify problems that sometimes appear
after a baby is discharged from the nursery and should
be evaluated before the two-week checkup. The main goal
is to identify jaundice, weight loss and other problems
an infant might develop. Most infants return to the
Newborn Follow-up Clinic within one to two days after
discharge. A nurse will weigh the infant and make sure
there are no feeding problems, and a lactation
consultant is available for any breastfeeding concerns.
