Labor and Delivery
NMMC Women's Hospital was the first
hospital in this area to introduce expectant parents to private birthing
rooms, decorated in a homelike environment, where the mother experiences
labor, delivery and recovery in the same room. In addition, the hospital
has on-site laboratory and radiology services.
The hospital has six birthing rooms, three
high risk labor rooms, and an observation suite. All are equipped with
central monitoring. In addition, the hospital has three operating rooms
and two delivery and/or cesarean section rooms.

Nursery
Care
The hospital staffs three nurseries –
well baby, intermediate and intensive care – which allow newborns to be
placed in the nursery that best suits their medical needs. Also, rooming in
is an option available for mothers of well babies.
Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
The hospital’s Neonatal Intensive
Care Unit is a specialty care facility and has recently undergone
extensive renovations and equipment upgrades. The NICU is designed to
handle the extensive problems typically encountered by the premature or
critically ill newborn, and can accommodate up to 22 babies.

Board-certified
neonatologists treat patients from throughout the region, whether they are
born at the NMMC Women’s Hospital or transferred by mobile intensive care
unit or helicopter to Tupelo from hospitals in outlying communities.
Neonatologists provide
medical care for sick newborn infants, who are either born prematurely,
are having difficulty making the transition from fetal life to life after
birth, or are suffering from congenital malformations or infectious
diseases. The Women’s Hospital NICU is able to provide two types of high
frequency ventilation for critically ill newborns.
|

Teleconferencing allows pediatricians to participate in real-time
discussions with surrounding medical centers, including Le Bonheur
Children's Medical Center and Vanderbuilt University Medical Center.

An NICU reunion, sponsored by the Women’s
Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, is hosted each year to reunite
NICU "graduates" with the physicians and nurses who provided
their care.

Emotional
Help
Free, confidential
meetings with a mental health professional are available at the NMMC Behavioral
Health Center and seven other locations throughout the region. These
one-on-one sessions help determine the appropriate treatment for
behavioral health issues such as depression, alcohol and substance abuse,
family difficulties, stress, financial pressures, grief, school related
issues, divorce, anxiety and thoughts of suicide. To schedule a free

other items helpful to breast-feeding mothers. The center is open from 9
a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and other times by appointment.

Lactation Consultation
NMMC Women’s Hospital staff and its physicians encourage breast-feeding.
To help mothers better understand the benefits of breast-feeding and to
learn feeding techniques and coping skills, specially-trained lactation
consultants are available. New mothers have the option of meeting with one
of the consultants either before or after delivery. The hospital employs
about 60 certified breast-feeding educators and three nurses who are
board-certified lactation consultants. These personal evaluations are
available by appointment. For more information or to schedule an
appointment, call (662) 377-4956 or 377-4958.
