North Mississippi Medical Center will host “Aging America: Coping with Loss, Dying and Death in Later Life,” a program presented by the Hospice Foundation of America.

America is aging at a rapid rate with 10,000 people in the U.S. turning 65 every day. By 2040, Medicare is expected to include 80 million enrollees.

Advanced age can bring a range of losses from a spouse or partner to independence and identity. Along with experiencing multiple losses, older people are more likely to suffer from multiple chronic conditions requiring complex medical care.

Panelists include Louise Cristo, Baldwyn Nursing Facility nurse practitioner; Molly Bass, NMMC-Pontotoc nursing facility social worker; and Cassidy Patton, NMMC-Pontotoc Senior Intensive Outpatient Program director.

Panelists will discuss how mental health professionals, health care providers, and the wider community can support the growing number of aging Americans through these losses.

The program provides an opportunity for a wide variety of professionals – including doctors, nurses, funeral directors, psychologists, educators, social workers and bereavement counselors – to share and exchange ideas and to obtain continuing education credits.
