Winter Storm 2021: Our Team C.A.R.E.S.

I did not want the events related to the winter storms we experienced this week pass us by without sharing my appreciation for the significant acts of teamwork and the abundance of actions and words that demonstrate our CARES values (Compassion, Accountability, Respect, Excellence and Smiles) in action. Thank you for keeping our health system available to patients who need us despite the many challenges presented by weather this week. There are too many examples to specifically mention here, but I would like to share a few that truly illustrate the unique and positive culture we are proud to be part of.

The NMHS staff exhibited significant acts of teamwork and demonstrated our CARES values (Compassion, Accountability, Respect, Excellences and Smiles).

Realizing that some of our teammates had difficulty accessing meals when sleeping in the hospital to cover shifts, other teammates ensured meals were made available to their teammates in this time of need. Also, many teammates volunteered their time and 4-wheel drive vehicles to transport teammates to and from their work locations.

Many teammates made it a priority to be there to cover their assigned shifts by either sleeping in the hospital or arranging for transportation to and from work.

One patient’s family brought the patient into one of our ERs. They brought the patient into the ER because the patient was on a ventilator at home and the family was concerned that they might lose power. The ER ensured the family and patient’s concerns were alleviated by keeping them in the facility with access to reliable power supply although no clinical care was needed.

Teamwork was demonstrated every minute of every day during an extended period of Code Green (Emergency Disaster) status. Departments within our hospitals and across the system continued to communicate and coordinate quickly and effectively to ensure patients had access to the level of care needed and that all staff had the supplies and tools needed to perform their job.

Despite professional and personal challenges presented by the weather, your teammates chose to keep a smile on their faces and continue extending friendliness, in addition to compassion and respect, to all patients and their teammates. A friendly attitude goes along way, doesn’t it?! Friendliness, as shown through a smile, is always the best choice to make!

The recent experience has confirmed that “our team C.A.R.E.S.” Thank you all for going above and beyond to help our patients and teammates. This week, we've demonstrated "what connected feels like." You are the best!
