NMMC Hospice Honors Caregiver of the Year
TUPELO, Miss.—North Mississippi Medical Center Hospice recently honored Marvin Jarrett of New Albany with the Caregiver of the Year Award.
Jarrett cared for his late wife, Mary, who was admitted to NMMC Hospice services in July 2016 and passed away peacefully at home in August 2017.
The couple was married for more than 70 years.
“During her hospice admission, he showed great commitment to her care,” said Shirley Wood, social worker, who nominated Jarrett. “He always made sure to keep her engaged in what was going on around her, even though she could not talk.”
He prepared her food and took time feeding her at each meal.
“At times, he neglected his own health to maintain her care,” Wood said. “At one point, he became sick and needed a hospital bed. He made sure the bed was right next to hers so they could remain together at all times.”
Shayla Rucker, RN, said the love between them shone. “Any time he would go near the bed, she would light up,” she said. “Even though she couldn’t talk you knew she loved him and his love was shown through his amazing care.”
The award presentation and celebration was held at the NMMC Hospice office in Tupelo. Many family members and hospice staff were in attendance to congratulate and honor him.
