NMMC Hospice to Train Volunteers
BALDWYN, Miss.—The North Mississippi Medical Center Hospice Program is seeking volunteers in the Baldwyn area and surrounding communities to visit patients and families in their homes.
The NMMC Hospice Program will offer a training workshop from 8:30 a.m.-noon Thursday, July 12, at Baldwyn Nursing Facility, 739 S. Fourth St. Volunteers will serve in their own communities and will be called upon as needs arise.
“Many families are overwhelmed by the terminal illness of their loved one and with all the emotional stress and caregiving responsibilities that go with it. They desperately need someone to talk to or sit with their sick family member,” said Sandra Gordon, NMMC Hospice volunteer and bereavement coordinator. “Oftentimes they just want someone to listen. Our volunteers act as liaisons between the Hospice patient, the caregivers and the professional health care staff. They provide nurturing and emotional support to our patients and their family members during this critical time in their lives.”
Volunteer duties consist of running errands and shopping, light meal preparation and delivery, providing companionship and other tasks. Interested individuals, including those who are unable to attend the July 12 workshop, are asked to call Gordon at (662) 377-3612 or 1- 800-852-1610.
