NMMC Infusion Services Wins Statewide Practice Award
TUPELO, Miss.—The Mississippi Society of Health-System Pharmacists recently honored the North Mississippi Medical Center Infusion Services Department with its Innovative Practice Award for 2018. The team includes Nick Fuqua, Pharm.D.; Amanda Summers, Pharm.D.; Patti Hawkins, Pharm.D.; Gichelle Clark, Pharm.D.; Janice Meguire, CPhT; Hillary Morgan, CPhT; Kayla Hawkins; Mathis Owen; and Melinda Peters, CPhT. Ginger Sweeney, Pharm.D., and Ronnie Crosswhite, Pharm.D., are also team members.
NMMC’s Specialty Pharmacy, which operates within the Infusion Department, is the only health system-based specialty pharmacy in Mississippi accredited by URAC, the gold standard for quality of service for specialty pharmacies. URAC reviews operations based on very stringent criteria to ensure patients are receiving the highest quality care.
With the changes in drug treatments available for chronic and catastrophic conditions, there has been an increase in drugs patients can take themselves, both oral and injectable, that were previously only available if given by a health care provider. In order to insure that patients had timely access to these drugs, often referred to as “specialty” drugs, this service was expanded.
The NMMC Specialty Pharmacy targets oncology, neurology and rheumatology patients but also offers full services for other diseases as well. Since the expansion of this service almost two years ago, patient and prescriber satisfaction has increased to over 95 percent for Specialty Pharmacy.
