NMMC Hospice Honors Caregivers of the Year
TUPELO, Miss.—North Mississippi Medical Center Hospice recently honored Dulcie Green and Jimmie Lou Loftin as the Caregivers of the Year.
Green cared for her daughter, Elizabeth, who had cerebral palsy.
“Mrs. Dulcie devoted her life to caring for her daughter, who never wanted for anything,” said Beth Buse, hospice social worker who nominated Green. “Elizabeth was a bundle of joy and always had a smile on her face because her mom took such amazing care of her.”
Green passed away at the age of 47 in the care of NMMC Hospice services.
For years, Elizabeth was able to use a wheelchair for mobility but always needed help with her activities of daily living. However, by the time she was admitted to hospice, she was bedbound and needed total care. “Mrs. Dulcie never hesitated,” Buse said. “She physically lifted her many times a day, fed her all her meals and kept items around that Elizabeth loved, like Mickey Mouse and Trolls. Elizabeth loved music and you could often hear a country radio station playing in the background at their home.”
Buse says they were mother and daughter, but also friends and roommates. “It wasn’t an easy burden for her to bear, but if you ask her she would gladly say she would do it all again, because the love she had for her child was like none other.”
Jimmie Lou Lofton cared for her husband, Carl. He was 92 and was admitted to hospice with Alzheimer’s disease. They were married for more than 70 years.
“Mrs. Jimmie Lou captured what it has meant to be a wife and lived it out completely,” said Karen Reid, hospice social worker who nominated Lofton. “She was always there for him, and always tried to make sure he was happy and had everything he might need. We know she was tired and overwhelmed, but she always put her own needs behind his. She is a true example of a loving caregiver.”
The award presentation and celebration was held at the NMMC Hospice office in Tupelo. Many family members and hospice staff were in attendance to congratulate and honor both caregivers.
