Rainer Retires from Respiratory Therapy

Angie Rainer retirementAngie Rainer of Respiratory Therapy has retired from North Mississippi Medical Center with 29 years of service.

A Pontotoc native, Rainer married her high school sweetheart, Jimmy, when she was 16 years old. After graduating from South Pontotoc High School in 1978, she stayed home with their son, Allen, for a while. Eight years later, their son Cody was born.

Early on, Rainer worked for a few years at Brookwood Furniture in Pontotoc before deciding on a career change. She enrolled in Itawamba Community College’s Respiratory Therapy program and worked briefly at DCH Regional Medical Center in Tuscaloosa. She graduated in 1989 and joined the staff at NMMC-Pontotoc. After about a year, she transferred to NMMC-Tupelo. “God put me in it,” Rainer said of her chosen field. “And God placed me in Tupelo.”

Over the years, Rainer worked throughout NMMC but 3 Central was her “home.” “The best part of my job was the ability to help someone,” she said, “even if it’s just to offer a hug.”

Rainer said she always appreciated the physicians listening to what the therapists tell them about their patients. “We work with some great doctors,” she said, “especially the pulmonologists.”

She will miss them as well as her coworkers, but most of all, “I’ll miss my patients,” she said. “They’re my babies.”

In retirement, Rainer looks forward to spending time with her family. Son Allen and his wife Angela live in New Albany with their four daughters, Kaylen, Kiana, Sara Beth and L.J. Son Cody and his wife Sara live in Pontotoc with their son, Caleb.

“Now I will have time to go to all their competitions—archery, winter guard and soccer,” she said. “I’ve got every Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday lined up.” She also enjoys gardening, cooking and traveling. She also plans to do volunteer work and become more active with her church, By Faith Church in Pontotoc.
