Scotty Shook retirement

Coworkers at Women’s Hospital honored Scotty Shook (third from left) with a retirement reception Jan. 24.

TUPELO - Scotty Shook, a registered respiratory therapist with Women and Children’s Services, recently retired from NMMC with almost 38 years of service.

At age 11, Shook moved to Mississippi with his family from Chicago. After graduating from Wheeler High School in 1978, he worked in restaurants, a shoe factory and a furniture factory before pursuing a career in respiratory therapy. He completed a certificate in respiratory therapy from Northeast Mississippi Community College in May 1982 and joined the NMMC staff a few days later. “I took the weekend off and then started to work on Monday,” he said.

In the early years Shook worked in the Emergency Department, Critical Care Unit, all nursing floors and pulmonary function testing. When Women’s Hospital opened in 1986, Shook became part of the original staff. “I was the second person through the door,” Shook said. “The first person was at the front of the stretcher, and I was pushing it.”

His wife Kim, a registered nurse, worked at NMMC for more than 30 years as well. “She worked on Pediatrics early on and our supervisors coordinated our schedules,” he said. “It worked out well.” Kim now serves as school nurse for Saltillo Elementary School.

Shook says he has plenty of projects at home to keep him busy; they have 20 acres to tend to, along with horses and plans to add cows soon. He also enjoys fishing, restoring furniture and working on cars. The Shooks have two children—son Corey, who is an orthodontist in Austin, Texas, and daughter Courtney, who lives next door. They have two grandsons, also known as “Papaw’s boys,” 5-year-old Brent and 2-year-old JJ.

“I will miss working, though,” Shook said. “I started working at 21, so I have worked longer than I haven’t.”
