Thompson Retires from IMA-Tupelo after 41-Year Career

Sheila Thompson retirement photoTUPELO - Shelia Thompson, admission-discharge specialist at IMA-Tupelo, retired Dec. 31 after 41 years of service.

A Shannon native, Thompson graduated from Nettleton High School in May 1978 and joined the North Mississippi Medical Center staff that August in Environmental Services. After a year on the job, she took some time off with her new baby. When she returned to NMMC, she worked as a nursing assistant and ward secretary in the Resource Pool, rotating to different parts of the hospital for many years.

In September 2000, Thompson transferred to IMA-Tupelo, where she spent the remainder of her career. Back then, IMA had fewer doctors and had just transitioned from paper charts to electronic medical records. “I love having people-to-people contact,” Thompson says of her job at the clinic’s registration desk. “I touch just about every patient who comes in. I love the feeling of knowing you’re helping somebody, making a difference.”

Over the years, Thompson has become known for her excellent memory. “I know almost every individual patient by name,” she says. “Several have said ‘no one will know me here when you’re gone.’”

In retirement, she looks forward to spending more time with family, which includes Rickey, her husband of 16 years. Rickey works as a CLPN with North Mississippi Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and was recently elected to his first term in the Mississippi House of Representatives. Together they have four children—Formeka Gunn, Shauntia Thompson and Shanna Ford, all of Tupelo; and Ryan Thompson, who lives in Indiana. The Thompsons have two grandchildren, 15-year-old Jaslyn Gunn and 2-month-old Kayleigh Rose Ford.

Thompson plans to start the New Year off by “catching up on rest first of all,” then volunteering in her community along with her church family at Union Baptist M.B. Church in Shannon. She also likes to read, watch TV, shop and travel.
