Vardaman Native Begins Family Medicine Residency at NMMC

TUPELO, Miss.—The North Mississippi Medical Center Family Medicine Residency Program recently welcomed eight new residents, including Stephen Morgan, M.D., of Vardaman.

Dr. Morgan received his bachelor’s degree in biology from the University of Mississippi School of Medicine in Oxford, and his medical degree from the University of Mississippi School of Medicine in Jackson. In medical school, he was a member of the Gold Humanism Honors Society, the Mississippi Rural Physicians Scholarship Program and the Family Medicine Interest Group.

He is the son of Ronnie and Judy Morgan. He and his wife, Haley, have an infant son, Caleb.

“The family medicine residency training program emphasizes quality medical education through traditional medical and surgical rotations. The program’s quality is also enhanced by a broad-based curriculum in family medicine in the NMMC Family Medicine Residency Center and in rural rotations throughout North Mississippi Medical Clinics,” said Dennis Smith, D.O., residency director. “Our primary goal is to increase the number of board-certified family physicians in Mississippi, and this program is leading us in that direction. We must rebuild our primary care base if we expect to properly care for the growing number of elderly and if we expect to improve quality of care while tempering cost increases.”
