Dr. Kilman Named NMHS Chief Medical Informatics Officer

TUPELO, Miss.—North Mississippi Health Services has named Ben Kilman, M.D., as Chief Medical Informatics Officer.

Dr. Kilman, who has worked as a family physician at Fulton Medical Clinic since 2012, will be transitioning from his clinical responsibilities to Information Technology Services on Oct. 1. He will continue seeing patients one day each week at Fulton Medical Clinic.

“The Chief Medical Informatics Officer position has become a critical role in health care. It combines clinical expertise with deep knowledge of IT systems,” said Jim Weldon, NMHS chief information officer. “These IT systems provide a backbone of support for most clinical workflows in the organization. Dr. Kilman will bridge these two disciplines to help contribute to providing the best information at point of care for our patients.”

Dr. Kilman received his medical training at the University of Mississippi School of Medicine in Jackson and completed his residency at the North Mississippi Medical Center Family Medicine Residency Center in Tupelo.

In 2015, Dr. Kilman began dedicating a portion of his time to information technology and efficiency initiatives. He currently serves as the lead physician for Project Connect, an initiative to replace the current electronic health record with Epic Ambulatory EMR. “The Epic system provides clinical tools and workflows that will allow us to serve our patients and providers with the best technology available,” Weldon said.

In his new role, Dr. Kilman will work with other health care providers to match their needs with the information technology capabilities.

“Information technology is critical to modern health care. Physician leadership ensures the perspective of clinical care is interwoven in every decision made,” Dr. Kilman said. “I am honored to be given the opportunity to serve in this capacity, using my clinical background and nine years of experience at North Mississippi Health Services, to help lead our team in providing the patients and clinicians with the best health care technology available. Project Connect will take our health care delivery to a new level, connecting patients and their health care team in ways not previously experienced in our region.”
