NMMC-West Point Recognizes Cannon as Outstanding Employee

WEST POINT, Miss.—The staff of North Mississippi Medical Center-West Point has selected Dorothy Cannon of the Food and Nutrition Department as the most recent Employee of the Quarter.

Cannon graduated from the Ministerial Institute in West Point and worked in the Babcock and Wilcox cafeteria for 23 years. She joined the hospital staff in 2004 and has worked as a cashier, supervisor, salad preparer, dishwashing aide and cook.

Cannon earned a certificate in food service management courses under the direction of Jim Brady Enterprises at Babcock and Wilcox cafeteria in 1993. She also trained in cake decoration, fondant and tiered cakes, and flowers and borders at Crafts and More in Starkville. In 2011, she earned Serv Safe certification.

“Dorothy treats everyone with the utmost respect. She is considerate of patient preferences, and is very in tune to patient satisfaction when it comes to satisfying their likes,” her nomination states. “She always has a pleasant smile. She has a soothing personality; she makes you feel like family.”

“The best part of my job is serving the patients and customers, and knowing at the end of a work day I was able to make a difference in someone’s life,” Cannon said.

She has been married to Kelvin Cannon for 43 years. They have two children—son Darwin (wife Ida), who lives in Itta Bena, and daughter Kulunie Cannon, who lives in Alexandria, La. She is a member of Pilgrim Grove Missionary Baptist Church, where she serves as a deaconess and on the kitchen committee. She enjoys going to church, watching movies, shopping, eating out and cooking family dinners.
