Hannah Receives DAISY Award

TUPELO, Miss.—Registered nurse Mercedes Hannah of 5 South recently received North Mississippi Medical Center’s DAISY Award for February 2019.

Mercedes HannahMercedes Hannah (second from right) is presented NMMC’s DAISY Award by (from left) David Wilson, NMMC president; Kristen Long, director of inpatient surgical nursing; and Donna Pritchard, NMMC chief nursing executive.

“I’ve been with Mama the whole time. She couldn’t speak, and I was scared,” wrote a patient’s daughter. “Then I met Mercedes. She calmed me, refocused me and explained Mama has a monitor and she and the rest of the nurses would be watching for the smallest of changes, and she has.” The daughter said Hannah’s reassurance and dedication allowed her to help with her mother’s care but also rest. She also appreciated that Hannah talked with and encouraged her mother, and willingly came no matter how many times they called for her.

“From the first moment we met her, she was so caring and compassionate,” the daughter wrote. “She’s respectful, understanding and her knowledge goes way beyond nursing. She has the heart of an angel and has made the biggest difference.”

A Guntown resident, Hannah graduated from Saltillo High School in 2015. She earned an associate degree in nursing from Itawamba Community College in May 2018 and joined the NMMC staff that July. She is certified in Advanced Cardiac Life Support and is currently pursuing her bachelor’s degree in nursing from Mississippi University for Women.

She received a certificate, a DAISY Award pin, a bouquet donated by Bishop’s Flower Shop and a hand-carved stone sculpture titled A Healer’s Touch.

The DAISY Award is an international program that rewards and celebrates the extraordinary compassionate and skillful care given by nurses every day. Nomination forms are available throughout NMMC or at For more information, call (662) 377-3431 or email
