Westmoreland Retires from Health Information Services
Health Information Services coworkers celebrated Cassandra Westmoreland during a retirement reception in her honor May 20. Her last day to work was June 3.
Cassandra Westmoreland, correspondence/release of information clerk with Health Information Services, has retired from North Mississippi Medical Center after more than 37 years of service.
A New Jersey native, Westmoreland graduated from Lawrence High School in Lawrence Township in 1975. She studied English at the University of New Jersey (formerly Trenton State College) and relocated with her parents to Mississippi in 1977. She attended Mississippi State University in Starkville and then moved to Tupelo.
She joined the NMMC staff in 1981 as a nurse aide. She also worked as a ward secretary before transferring to the business office, where she worked in admissions and collections for five years. In 1990, she assumed her current role in Health Information Services.
Westmoreland says she will miss the people she worked with, as well as her customers. “They’re really not coworkers, they’re family,” she said. “That’s what I have loved the most and will miss the most. I have enjoyed coming into contact with people from all walks of life.”
Westmoreland also likes to encourage others and will miss those opportunities she had at work. “Sometimes people will tell you their stories, and I have prayed for some as they have come into our office,” she said. “That part has really touched my heart.”
Retirement will allow her more time to enjoy her “first love,” which is sewing. “I make children’s clothes,” Westmoreland said. “I already have some orders and I have been stocking up on fabric.”
She belongs to several sewing groups and enjoys the camaraderie with those who share her passion. “I have a pen pal from Ghana who I met through a sewing group,” she said. “That has been very rewarding.”
She and her husband, Carl, live in Mooreville. In retirement she also looks forward to spending time with her mother, who lives in Louisville, and finding treasures at rummage sales and “junk stores.” She has a daughter, Gena Westmoreland, who lives in Louisiana, and two sons, Carl Gaston Westmoreland and Zachary Westmoreland, who live in Tupelo. Zachary works for NMMC’s Supply Processing Distribution Department. Her stepdaughters are Kimberly Wilson, who lives in New Albany and works for NMMC’s Population Health Department, and Felicia Gandy, who lives in Louisiana. She has two grandchildren—Marley Hudson, 4, and Carlee Westmoreland, 3—and six step-grandchildren—Trey Jenkins, Jasmine Bean, Justin Wilson, Khloe Wilson, Bryson Bean and Terrez Gandy. The Westmorelands attend White Hill M.B. Church in Tupelo.
