Grisham Retires from 31-Year Career

Debra Grisham retirementDebra Grisham, RN, has retired from North Mississippi Medical Center after 31 years.

Reared in Itawamba County, Grisham graduated from Itawamba Agricultural High School in 1973. She attended Itawamba Community College and earned a bachelor’s degree in business education from Mississippi University for Women. After working as an executive secretary for several years, she became a communications specialist for Tennessee Valley Authority.

When that job ended, Grisham stayed home briefly with her young children, but in 1989 she took a temporary job in NMMC’s Human Resources Department. In June 1989 she was hired as secretary in the hospital’s Education Department. In that role, she worked closely with the tuition reimbursement and scholarship programs and decided to take advantage of the benefits herself and launch a second career as a nurse.

She graduated with her associate degree in nursing from Itawamba Community College in 1996 and initially worked on several different units. She soon found her home on 3 North, which was the Gastroenterology/Genitourinary (GI/GU) unit, and worked there 23 years. Last year she transferred to the Post-Acute Nursing Resource Pool, for which she works at Baldwyn Nursing Facility, Inpatient Hospice and Rehabilitation Institute.

“I have enjoyed my association with NMMC for almost 31 years,” Grisham said. “I have met many wonderful people and gained invaluable skills and knowledge that have enriched my personal and professional life throughout the years. Now it is time to step back and enjoy retirement.”

Grisham looks forward to spending more time with her family, which includes husband Jimmy and adult children Jamey and Julie. She plans to stay busy with exercise, reading, travel, caring for rescue animals, and attending concerts, theater and Ole Miss sports. “I have a lot of projects planned at home, and now I will have more time to do volunteer work,” she said. She is a member of First United Methodist Church in Tupelo, where she sings in the choir.
