NMMC-West Point Awards First Dr. Hiroji Noguchi Memorial Scholarship

Karina GarciaNorth Mississippi Medical Center-West Point recently presented the first Dr. Hiroji Noguchi Memorial Scholarship to Karina Garcia, a recent graduate of West Point High School.

The scholarship is administered by the Health Care Foundation of North Mississippi for high school seniors in Clay County schools who are pursuing a career in health care. Friends and colleagues of Dr. Noguchi established the scholarship shortly after his death on Oct. 4, 2019. Dr. Noguchi joined the NMMC-West Point medical staff in June 2017 after moving to this area from Honolulu, Hawaii, where he practiced for 18 years.

Garcia plans to study nursing at Mississippi University for Women and has a special interest in pediatrics. At West Point High School, she served as secretary of the National Honor Society. She graduated near the top of her class and has completed several dual-enrollment courses. Garcia also serves as a Catholic catechist and is active with the Catholic Youth Organization. She is the daughter of Armando and Patricia Garcia.

“Karina is highly motivated and ambitious,” wrote Missy Brown, WPHS guidance counselor, in her letter of recommendation. “I believe she is one of those people that has intrinsic motivation with a strong drive to succeed in whatever she is trying to accomplish.”

“She is a dedicated and hard worker, and is always cheerful and helpful with the customers,” wrote Jennifer Mize, who works with Garcia at Rose Drug Company. “(She is) always going above and beyond, with great people skills, and problem-solving skills as well.”
