Starting in April 2018, Medicare began mailing new cards with new Medicare numbers. The cards will have a new, unique Medicare number instead of a Social Security number. Medicare is removing Social Security numbers from Medicare cards to help keep identities secure.
Medicare will mail new Medicare cards between April 2018 and April 2019. Protect yourself by making sure no one can get your personal information from your old Medicare card. Mailing new cards to everyone will take some time so your card might arrive at a different time than other friends, neighbors or family members with Medicare. To make sure your mailing address is current, you can call 1-800-772-1213 or visit https://ssa.gov/myaccount. TTY users can call 1-800-325-0778.
Once you receive your new card, destroy your old card and start using the new one right away. People with Medicare will have new cards with new numbers. You can start using your new Medicare card right away. If someone calls you unexpectedly saying they “work with” or represent Medicare and need your card number or other personal information, hang up. Medicare will only call you if you’ve called and left a message or if a representative said that someone will call you back.
Medicare will never contact you for your Medicare number or other personal information. Beware of anyone who contacts you and asks you to give personal or private information to get your new Medicare number and card.
