Internal Medicine Residency Observership 

Observership opportunities are intended for individuals with a demonstrated interest in Internal Medicine, including but not limited to International Medical Graduates (IMGs) and other qualified medical trainees, subject to program approval and completion of all required documentation.

Observerships are limited to a maximum duration of two (2) weeks. Extensions beyond two weeks are not permitted under any circumstances.

Observers will be assigned to one Internal Medicine inpatient team only for the entirety of their observership. Observers will not rotate between teams during their observership period. Team assignments are determined by the Internal Medicine Residency Program leadership based on availability and educational considerations. Observership will be primarily focused in the hospital setting. If there’s interest in experiencing the clinic setting, that opportunity will be considered on a case-by-case basis and will be limited to a maximum of one half day per week. This will be at the discretion of the program and dependent on availability.

Observers will be primarily paired with third-year (PGY-3) Internal Medicine residents. PGY-3 residents will serve as the main point of contact, providing guidance, facilitating shadowing opportunities, and modeling clinical workflow and professionalism.

Observerships are strictly observational in nature. Observers may shadow residents and attending physicians and attend rounds and educational conferences as permitted. Observers may not participate in direct patient care, enter orders, write notes, access the electronic medical record independently, or perform clinical or procedural tasks.

Observers must comply with all NMMC and Graduate Medical Education (GME) policies, including HIPAA requirements, institutional professionalism standards, dress code expectations, and identification badge requirements. Failure to comply may result in immediate termination of the observership.

Participation in an observership with the North Mississippi Medical Center Internal Medicine Residency Program does not guarantee an interview invitation, ranking, or acceptance into the residency program. Observerships are offered solely for educational and observational purposes and are not intended to serve as an evaluation or audition rotation. All residency selection decisions are made through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) and follow established institutional and ACGME guidelines.

All observerships must be approved and coordinated through the Internal Medicine Residency Program administration. Observers are required to complete all application materials prior to the start of the observership.
