- Year Joined North Mississippi Health Services:
- University of Mississippi at Jackson, Doctor of Medicine
Justin Smith, M.D., grew up in the Delta, outside of Greenville, Miss. After graduating from Delta State University, he attended medical school at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, where he graduated with honors. He completed his residency training at Floyd Medical Center in Rome, Ga., where he earned the honor of Co-Chief Resident, alongside Dr. Curtis Glidewell.
“Growing up in the Mississippi Delta, I experienced firsthand what it was like to have limited resources when it comes to health care. I watched my family struggle with this when it came to their own medical care, and it made me realize at an early age how badly the state of Mississippi needed more health care providers, primarily in smaller, underserved communities,” he says. “This was my reasoning for going into medicine and for being a part of the Mississippi Rural Physician Program, which places recently graduated physicians into underserved communities in Mississippi.”
Dr. Smith says that choosing to work for New Albany Medical Clinic was an easy decision. “They have a reputation for taking great care of both their patients and their employees. The decision for my wife and me began as a regional one. She grew up in Memphis, and I was raised in the Mississippi Delta so north Mississippi seemed to be good middle ground for us,” he says. “When we were searching for jobs in the area, we came across New Albany and immediately fell for its small town charm. It just so happened that the previous physician in town, Dr. Shirley, was retiring and they needed someone to take over – the rest is history.”
Dr. Smith’s hobbies include fishing, golf, running, hunting, watching movies and travel.
