Growing Our Own
By investing in education and hands-on training, we’re helping prepare the next generation of physicians and health care professionals to serve our patients and communities.
Graduate Medical Education
Family Medicine Residency Program
Seven residents graduated in June from our Family Medicine Residency Program. Four of these physicians chose to stay and practice in Mississippi. Eight new residents started the three-year program this year, bringing the total to 24 family medicine residents in training.
Internal Medicine Residency Program
Our Internal Medicine Residency Program celebrated 12 graduates this year. Three of these graduates became hospitalist physicians with NMMC, while three are continuing their education through our Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship. Twenty-four new residents started the three-year residency program in 2026, bringing the total to 71 internal medicine residents in training.
Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship
Four fellows completed the first year of the three-year Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship, which launched in 2025. Four new fellows — all graduates of NMMC internal medicine residency training — joined the fellowship in 2026. The fellowship is approved to train a total of 12 physicians.
Training Programs
Pharmacy Residency Program
Four pharmacists completed NMMC’s year-long Pharmacy Residency Program in 2026. Two pharmacists joined our hospital staff upon graduation. Accredited since 1994, our program now boasts 86 graduates.
Nurse Extern Program
Annual support of $100,000 from the Brevard Healthcare Endowment to the Health Care Foundation of North Mississippi provides full tuition assistance to every nurse extern, saving each student about $1,500. This year, 100 nursing students gained hands-on clinical experience at NMHS facilities in Tupelo and West Point. The Foundation’s investment removes financial barriers, prepares future nurses and strengthens the region’s health care workforce.
Medical Laboratory Science Program
Nine students completed our Medical Laboratory Science Program in 2026. Six of them now work for NMHS. Five new students began the year-long program this fall.
