Summary
Drs. Terry Pinson and Will Cauthen explain the health screenings and other requirements NMHS uses to make sure you are as prepared as possible for weight loss surgery.
When people think about bariatric surgery, they often focus on the operation itself. While surgery is an important step, it's actually just a small part of the overall journey.
At its core, bariatric surgery is about improving health, preventing disease and helping patients build a foundation for long-term success. The procedure may take less than an hour, but the benefits can last a lifetime when combined with the right support and lifestyle changes.
Preparing for Bariatric Surgery Starts Long Before the Operation
Many patients are surprised to learn how much preparation takes place before bariatric surgery.
Our goal isn't simply to help someone lose weight. We want to make sure they are as healthy as possible before surgery and positioned for success afterward.
That often includes reviewing preventive health screenings and helping patients get up to date on important exams. Depending on age and health history, this may include mammograms, colon cancer screenings and upper endoscopy procedures.
These evaluations help identify potential health concerns and ensure patients are ready for surgery and the changes that come with it.
Weight Loss Surgery Is Part of a Comprehensive Health Plan
Obesity affects nearly every system in the body. It can increase the risk of diabetes, heart disease, sleep apnea, joint pain and many other chronic conditions.
Because of this, we take a whole-person approach to care.
Bariatric surgery can help patients improve their health, but it works best when combined with education, medical supervision and ongoing support. Rather than focusing only on the operation, our team works with patients before surgery to develop healthy habits, understand nutrition and prepare for long-term lifestyle changes.
Why Long-Term Follow-Up Matters After Bariatric Surgery
One of the biggest misconceptions about bariatric surgery is that the journey ends after the procedure.
In reality, that's when a new chapter begins.
Long-term success requires ongoing support and accountability. That's why follow-up care is such an important part of every patient's experience.
Regular visits allow us to monitor progress, address challenges and help patients stay on track with their goals. We want patients to continue thriving years after surgery, not just in the first few months.
Long-term success isn't measured by a number on the scale. It's measured by improved health, increased energy and a better quality of life.
Bariatric Surgery Is a Tool, Not a Magic Solution
One of the most important messages we share with patients is that bariatric surgery is a tool.
Like any tool, its effectiveness depends on how it's used.
Surgery can help patients lose weight and better manage obesity-related conditions, but lasting success also requires healthy habits and ongoing support. Our role as a bariatric team is to coach, educate and guide patients along the way.
The Goal: Lifelong Health
The surgery itself may take less than an hour, but it’s impact can extend for decades. Our focus extends far beyond weight loss to helping patients become healthier, more active and more successful in the long run.
Choosing bariatric surgery is not simply choosing a procedure. It is taking an important step toward a healthier future, and our team is committed to helping every step of the way.
