From Farmer to Fighter: Bobby Burleson’s Story of Compassionate Care

Summary
After decades of serving his community as a farmer, teacher and county commissioner, Bobby Burleson found himself in need of urgent care. His journey led him to our hospital—where he received expert treatment and compassionate support.
For Bobby Burleson of Winfield, Alabama, service has always been a way of life.
A lifelong farmer at heart, Bobby also spent 25 years as a teacher and served as a county commissioner for 28 years, elected to seven consecutive terms. When he wasn’t working, he enjoyed fishing, hunting and spending time outdoors — especially watching his son carry on the family farming tradition.
But even the most active lives can be interrupted by health challenges.
Bobby’s journey with North Mississippi Health Services-South Marion began years ago when he suffered a heart attack.
“They took care of my needs right quick,” he recalled. “They expedited me to get somewhere I could have my heart taken care of. They airlifted me out, and by daylight, I had stents placed — with good results and no harmful effects.”
More recently, Bobby faced another health scare. While on blood thinners because of his heart condition, he accidentally dropped a large can of tomatoes on his leg, causing a hematoma. “It got to be the size of a loaf of bread,” he said. He immediately went to the emergency room at NMHS-South Marion, where he was admitted and treated with urgency and care.
“I was promptly admitted and treated by some people that were very up on what they were doing,” Bobby said. “I felt very secure. They took care of my family very well to see that I was comfortable.”
A few days later, he had surgery on his leg. He stayed in the hospital for several days, using a wound vac machine to aid healing.
“I have no pain now,” he shared. “The doctors were very thorough in wrapping and cleaning. The nurses were there promptly if I needed any help, because I wasn’t able to get up and walk.”
Bobby emphasized the professionalism and compassion of the entire care team. “All my needs were taken care of. I couldn’t have asked for any more prompt, professional, compassionate care than I had.”
Reflecting on his experience, Bobby expressed deep gratitude: “I’m just so thankful for your facilities here. If I had to do it again, I can’t think of a thing that I would change that would make my stay any better here.”
