Stronger than Ever

Summary
“I’m so much stronger and have so much energy,” says Donna Marecle, who is fighting osteoporosis with strength training.
Donna Marecle has always been active, but when she turned 60, she discovered just how fragile her bones had become.
That year, she fractured her wrist and required surgery involving a metal plate and screws.
The following year, she suffered a stress fracture in her leg and relied on crutches for six weeks.
Breaking the Cycle
After two broken bones in as many years, Donna talked to her doctor about bone density testing. Her first bone density scan in September 2022 revealed osteopenia, a lower-than-average bone density that can make bones weaker and increase the risk of fracture.
In 2023, Donna tore her meniscus, the cartilage pads in the knee that function as a cushion between the shinbone and thighbone. She saw Dr. Matthew Miller at Specialty Orthopedic Group, who encouraged Donna to see Amy Ballard, a physician assistant with North Mississippi Medical Center’s Orthopaedic Trauma Clinic. Amy specializes in helping people with osteopenia or osteoporosis prevent fractures.
Expert Help
In addition to prescription medication, Amy recommended a strength training regimen at North Mississippi Medical Center’s Wellness Center in Tupelo. “I wanted to exercise, but I didn’t want to hurt myself again,” Donna said. “I needed someone to help me do it properly.”
She found just that and more in fitness specialist Regina Beyer. Since November 2023, Donna works out with Regina, her personal trainer, twice a week and several other days on her own. Knowing that Regina expects her to show up helps keep Donna accountable—one key to success.
Great Strides
“Donna is committed to her workout and works hard each session,” Regina said. “Over this time, I’ve seen so many changes in Donna. She has lost pounds and inches but increased strength and muscle mass.”
Donna has progressed from 5- and 8-pound dumbbells to 15- and 20-pound dumbbells. She started with planks from her knees for 30 seconds and now can hold a full plank for one minute. Her balance is also vastly improved.
Regina says, “Donna is proof that by working hard and being consistent, you can obtain your goal.”
Now is the Time
Donna encourages others not to wait until a fracture happens to seek help. “Pay attention to your bone density, especially if you’ve gone through menopause,” she said. “Don’t wait until you’re 65 for a bone density screening, the age when it’s recommended for people at average risk. By then it’s late in the game and you have to work hard to rebuild it.”
Donna completed a 5K in 2023 and another in 2024. This year, she and her daughter plan to run a 5K in Orlando, combining the race with a fun adventure together.
“I’m so much stronger and have so much energy,” she said. “I’ve never felt better.”
