Summary

While these conversations can seem intimidating, it is never too soon to talk with those you love about what matters most during a serious illness.

When I was young, my parents had conversations with our family regarding emergency preparedness.

We understood how to respond appropriately to situations like a house fire or inclement weather. These talks were intentional to help reduce confusion and panic during a time of crisis.

Advance care planning is very similar as it focuses on medical preparedness. More than just a legal document, it is an ongoing conversation with loved ones about the type of care you would like to receive if you were unable to speak for yourself.

Our goal is to simplify this conversation and ensure your wishes are known and respected throughout the treatment process. The “Conversations Before the Crisis” booklet provides tools, guidance and resources to begin talking with loved ones concerning your wishes for life-sustaining treatments.

This process also provides peace of mind and comfort to family members who are making complicated medical decisions.

Because a medical crisis can be emotional and overwhelming, the most appropriate time and place for these discussions should begin is in a comfortable setting, rather than in a hospital or critical care unit.

When considering this conversation, it is important to communicate thoughts on important matters such as who will make decisions for you if you cannot speak for yourself and what do you want them to know?

Remember, while these conversations can seem intimidating, it is never too soon to talk with those you love about what matters most during a serious illness. Download your copy of the booklet and have this conversation with loved ones today.
