Do I Really Need a Flu Shot?

Grandparents walking with grandchildren
Summary

Don't be fooled: influenza is a major killer and hasn't lost any of its power to kill.

Do I really need a flu shot? This is the question some are asking, and it’s a good question! Influenza (flu) hasn’t been a big problem in recent times, so it may have fallen off the radar for some. However, do not be fooled. Influenza is a major killer and has not lost any of its power to kill.

Globally, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that the flu kills 290,000 to 650,000 people per year.

These strategies protect us from influenza:

  • Handwashing
  • Mask-wearing
  • Social distancing
  • VACCINATION!

Fast Facts

  • Flu shots are safe, and they cannot give you the flu. They do not contain any COVID vaccine.
  • It takes about two weeks for the flu shot to build up your immunity, so don’t delay.
  • Children as young as 6 months of age can and should get the flu shot.
  • We need to get flu shots annually in the fall of the year.
  • Flu vaccines are readily available, and they are typically covered by insurance.

The flu shot isn’t perfect, but it’s very good. It can save your life! If you get symptoms of flu, see your health care provider for timely diagnosis and treatment. Effective treatments are available if you don’t delay.

For more information, please contact your primary care provider. If you don’t have a primary care provider, please call 1-800-THE-DESK (1-800-843-3375).
