AMORY, Miss. – North Mississippi Health Services is proud to welcome two exceptional surgeons, Dr. Hoat M. Hoang and Dr. Almaz Kurbanov, and Amory Surgery Clinic to the NMHS system in continued commitment to provide expert surgical care for patients across the region.
“Both surgeons have been providing exceptional surgical care to our community for many years," said Jamie Rodgers, administrator at North Mississippi Medical Center Gilmore-Amory. "With this new partnership, we aim to build upon their outstanding reputation for many years to come. These surgeons are integral to our mission of continuously improving the health of the people in our region. This community is blessed to have surgeons like Dr. Hoang and Dr. Kurbanov, and we are so excited to welcome them to our North Mississippi Health Service team.”
“Dr. Hoang has been a trusted member of our medical staff for more than two decades,” said David Barber, president of North Mississippi Medical Clinics. “We are also thrilled to welcome Dr. Kurbanov. Their surgical expertise, compassionate care and dedication to innovation make them invaluable assets to our team and to the patients we serve.”
Dr. Hoang has served patients at NMMC Gilmore-Amory for more than 25 years and is a trusted leader in the local medical community. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge and his medical degree from LSU School of Medicine in New Orleans. He completed his general surgery residency at LSU Health Sciences Center.
Board certified by the American Board of Surgery and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, Dr. Hoang specializes in thyroid, breast, advanced laparoscopic and robotic surgery. His practice also includes screening and diagnostic endoscopy, including colonoscopy and upper endoscopy.
Dr. Hoang says health care has always been his calling. “I have always been humbled by the complexity of God’s creation,” he said. “Playing a small role in healing has been truly rewarding.” He adds that trust remains the foundation of his practice. “Combining the tradition of caring with the latest surgical advancements is what allows us to continue delivering excellent care,” he said.
Outside of work Dr. Hoang and his wife, Nancy, are active members of St. Helen Catholic Church in Amory. They have two children, Hannah and Luke. In his free time, Dr. Hoang enjoys hunting and both freshwater and offshore fishing.
Dr. Kurbanov is board certified by the American Board of Surgery and completed his general surgery residency at Penn State Hershey Medical Center in Pennsylvania. He earned his medical degree from Uludag University in Turkey in 2004.
His journey into medicine began in a deeply personal way. After earning a gold medal at the International Mathematics Olympiad, Dr. Kurbanov was involved in a serious car accident. While recovering from surgery, he became fascinated by the healing process. Though he had been accepted to Harvard University to study mathematics, he changed course and pursued a career in medicine.
“Helping people in moments of vulnerability and providing solutions through surgical skill felt like a greater calling,” Dr. Kurbanov said.
He later shadowed surgeons and worked in a vascular physiology research lab, which strengthened his interest in surgical innovation. Today, he focuses on advancing minimally invasive and robotic surgery techniques. He looks forward to expanding the robotic-assisted surgery program and enhancing access to modern treatment options across Mississippi.
In his spare time Dr. Kurbanov enjoys CrossFit, golfing and fishing.
Amory Surgery Clinic will continue to welcome patients at 1127 Earl Frye Blvd., Suite B. For more information visit nmhs.net.
