Join Us in the Fight Against Colorectal Cancer

Summary
Screening is our best defense - capable of early detection, even prevention by removing precancerous polyps
Many people are unaware they are part of a crucial battle – the fight against colorectal cancer.
With the United States leading in screening rates globally, we are on the front lines, yet the battle is far from over. Only two-thirds of Americans are screened, leaving room for improvement, especially as new recommendations suggest earlier screenings.
Understanding the Enemy: What Is Colorectal Cancer?
Colorectal cancer, often simply referred to as colon cancer, begins as a seemingly innocent polyp. A polyp is a benign growth that begins in the innermost layer of the colon or rectum called the mucosa. If cells continue to grow and spread through the mucosa, then cancer is present. Its stealthy nature, growing unnoticed and often symptom-free, underscores the critical importance of regular screening.
The Prevalence of Colorectal Cancer
It's a common foe, ranking third in prevalence among all cancers in both men and women and second in cancer deaths. The statistics are sobering, with a one in 20 lifetime risk of developing the disease. Additionally, colon cancer is becoming more common at an earlier age. Estimates show that people born around 1990 have twice the risk of colon cancer and four times the risk of rectal cancer than those born around 1950, emphasizing the urgency for awareness and action.
New strategies in Screening: Starting at Age 45
Screening is our best defense, capable of early detection or even prevention by removing precancerous polyps. Health organizations now recommend beginning colorectal cancer screenings at age 45, especially given the rising incidence in younger populations. Early detection is vital for catching and combating the disease before it advances.
Colonoscopy is a Powerful Cancer Prevention Tool
Colonoscopy is the only screening test that allows both identification and removal of polyps. With colonoscopy, one can dramatically reduce the risk of developing colorectal cancer - by up to 90% - underscoring the profound impact of proactive health measures.
Heeding the Warning Signs
Be vigilant for signs like blood in the stool, persistent stomach pain, changes in bowel habits or unexplained weight loss. These symptoms demand immediate attention. However, remember that early stages might not present with any symptoms, emphasizing the importance of early detection with regular screenings.
Fortifying Your Defenses: Prevention Through Lifestyle
A healthy lifestyle can significantly reduce your risk. Staying active, maintaining a healthy weight, limiting alcohol intake, eating a high-fiber diet, avoiding tobacco and eating a diet rich in fiber while limiting red and processed meats can significantly reduce your risk.
Empowering Action: What You Can Do
Take action against colorectal cancer. Schedule a screening, educate yourself and others and embrace lifestyle changes that protect your health. Share your stories, spread the word, and stand with us in the fight against colorectal cancer. Together, we can turn the tide in this crucial battle for our health.
Let's not allow colorectal cancer to remain a shadowy threat. Awareness, prevention and timely action are our best weapons. Join us in the fight against colorectal cancer.
