A Team Approach to Weight Loss

Summary

Bariatric surgeon Dr. Terry Pinson explains how nurses, dietitians, specialists and support staff work together to help patients achieve lasting success after weight loss surgery.

When people think about bariatric surgery, they often focus on the surgeon. That's understandable. After all, the surgeon performs the operation.

But one of the biggest reasons patients succeed after bariatric surgery has very little to do with one individual. It has everything to do with the team behind them.

The truth is that bariatric surgery is a team sport.

From the moment a patient begins exploring weight loss surgery to years after their procedure, a network of health care professionals is working together to help them achieve the best possible outcome.

It Takes a Village

Bariatric surgery is not something that happens on a single day in the operating room.

Long before surgery, patients work with health care professionals who help evaluate their health, educate them about their options and prepare them for the lifestyle changes that support long-term success. After surgery, that support continues.

At North Mississippi Health Services, our bariatric team includes nurses, nurse practitioners, dietitians, exercise physiologists and clinic staff who work closely with patients throughout their journey. Each person plays an important role in helping patients navigate challenges, celebrate successes and stay focused on their goals.
As surgeons, we may be on the front line, but we are far from alone.

Comprehensive Care Makes a Difference

One of the greatest strengths of our program is that patients have access to an entire health care system working together on their behalf.

Obesity affects nearly every part of the body, which means treatment often requires expertise from multiple specialties. That's why collaboration is so important.

Our team works closely with specialists throughout the health system, including cardiologists, gastroenterologists, pulmonologists and many others. Everyone shares the same goal: helping patients become healthier and improving their quality of life.

When specialists communicate and work together, patients benefit from more coordinated care, fewer delays and a smoother experience overall.

Big-City Resources With a Personal Touch

One thing I appreciate most about practicing in Tupelo is that we offer the resources and expertise often found in major medical centers while maintaining the relationships that come with a smaller community.
We have access to a wide range of medical specialties and advanced services. At the same time, the physicians working together aren't strangers.

They're colleagues we speak with regularly. They're people we know personally.

When a patient needs additional testing or consultation, we're able to quickly connect with the right specialist and coordinate care. Instead of navigating a complicated system on their own, patients benefit from a network of providers who are already working together.

That level of collaboration can make a meaningful difference both before and after surgery.

A Partnership Focused on the Patient

The best bariatric programs aren't built around surgeons. They're built around patients.

Every member of the care team contributes to the patient's success. Whether it's answering questions, helping with nutrition planning, managing medical conditions or providing encouragement during recovery, each interaction plays a role in helping patients achieve their goals.

Weight loss surgery is a life-changing decision, but surgery itself is only one part of the process. Long-term success comes from education, support, accountability and access to the right resources at the right time.
That's why a comprehensive team approach matters so much.

You're Never Doing This Alone

Choosing bariatric surgery is a major step, and it's natural to have questions or concerns along the way.
The good news is that you don't have to navigate the process by yourself. Behind every successful bariatric patient is a team of health care professionals committed to helping them improve their health and build a better future. From your first consultation through long-term follow-up care, that team is there to support you every step of the way.

Because when it comes to weight loss surgery, success isn't about one doctor. It's about an entire team working together to help you achieve lasting results.
